Customer

Savino Del Bene is a leading Italian company with more than a 120-year history in the logistics and shipment industries. The company’s strength is based on efficient management and effectiveness of the logistics processes. It employs over 5000 people in 60 countries all over the world.

It also offers a wide range of logistics services, including air and marine transport, customs clearance, storage and distribution. It also handles oversized cargo and executes warehousing and distribution processes for customers from various sectors, including the automotive, fashion, food, medical and technological industries.
One of the key advantages of Savino Del Bene is its experience and effectiveness in the management of complex supply chains.

The company applies state-of-the-arts logistics and information technology solutions to optimise, accelerate, and decrease the costs of transport and warehousing. This can be achieved by using a network infrastructure based on the products from one of the global leaders, HPE Aruba.

In response to the development of the supply chain in Northern Poland, Savino Del Bene Poland implements a comprehensive plan of investment in modern tools for the management of warehouse spaces, where it is necessary to use the most advanced network infrastructure. Savino del Bene selected a Polish company, KOMA NORD, the only double platinum HPE partner in Poland, as the network contractor for the installation of a wireless network in the warehouses they rented.

Challenges

The Savino Del Bene Poland large surface-area warehouses in Gdańsk constitute specific infrastructures in terms of the proper design and implementation of network solutions. The facilities rented from their owner, Panattoni Park, are in shell and core fit out stage, which involves a series of construction limitations. The tenants are obliged to return the rented infrastructure in an unchanged condition on pain of high penalties. Any interference or changes in the structure of the rented facilities would ensue high additional costs, or even the loss of the owner’s warranty.

Our task is to install a full technical infrastructure for a LAN and Wi-Fi network in these facilities without any interference with their construction elements. The installation of wiring and other equipment had to be performed considering many atypical conditions.

Moreover, the wireless network had to ensure an even signal coverage for both the office part and high storage warehouse space, generally unfavourable for radio wave propagation. The efficiency of the wireless solutions had to be verified by means of special field distribution studies. Before commencing work, it was required to prepare and approve the design strictly according to the instructions imposed by the owner of the facilities.

Implementation

Passive and active part

Our engineering team have comprehensively designed the active and passive parts of the LAN structured cabling for the new infrastructure, which was drawn onto the plans provided by the General Contractor. All the instructions were followed, the required strength standards were met and the compatibility with owner’s warranty was maintained. The design covered the installation of the active part in the warehouses and offices, comprising of: 35 Aruba 505 Access Points and Aruba 6100 switches. In the passive part, structural copper and fibre optic wiring was designed in a configuration ensuring full redundancy of the critical fibre optic connections.

No interference in the facility structure

Using our experience in similar projects, we selected equipment compatible with local construction assumptions. Consequently, it was possible to mount the devices directly to the load bearing pillars using special clamps. Thus, in compliance with the requirements, the equipment can be easily removed and there was no interference with the structural elements. In two stages, a total area was covered with Wi-Fi signal measuring over 13 thousand square metres in two class A warehouse and manufacturing buildings. The same solutions were applied for the robust Panduit structural wiring installed in specially mounted cable conduits. During installation, appropriate distances from other installations were maintained, thus minimising the risk of undesired crosstalk and interference, known as Alien Crosstalk.

Optimisation

The warehouse space was filled with Access Points in such a manner as to ensure effectiveness of the wave propagation adequately to the type and distribution of the stored materials. Their location was calculated based on the performed studies and electromagnetic field distribution maps created by special software, known as heatmaps. Moreover, by taking into account the type of the  stored objects, in this case pallets, cost-effectiveness was additionally increased thanks to the elimination of the necessity to install an excessive number of redundant Access Points.

Conclusions

As a result of the implementation, reliable Aruba and Panduit solutions were installed, ensuring fast and stable wireless communication. The network covered the Savino Del Bene Poland warehouse and office facilities, with a total area of 13,000 square metres. Additionally, the entire network is globally managed through advanced Aruba Central software.

Thanks to the special installation method of devices and wiring, the principle of “no new holes in the structural elements” has not been violated in whole object. Thus, it was ensured that all the installed network elements can be easily removed. All the requirements concerning efficiency and appropriate signal coverage in the demanding warehouse environment were met, and the client achieved the efficient network which is customized to his specific business model.

So, another properly connected logistics point has appeared on the centrally managed map of the international network of Savino Del Bene branches, increasing the company’s potential and capabilities.
It is also worth noting that as a partner with global companies, such as HPE Aruba or Panduit, we are able to implement projects based on solutions used in various locations all over the world. This enables the optimisation of  the management, communication and costs.
