Yubico

yubikey

Yubico was founded in Sweden in 2007 with the mission of making secure logins easy and accessible to everyone. In close collaboration with leading internet companies and innovation leaders, Yubico has enabled native support for YubiKey security keys on major platforms and web browsers to ensure security for billions of internet users worldwide.

The Yubico team is present in 11 countries, and YubiKey security keys, manufactured in Sweden and the USA, have gained the trust of major enterprises and millions of users worldwide. The company is privately held and backed by renowned Swedish and American investors, having been profitable for the past 6 years.

The company's core product, YubiKey, is a small USB and NFC security key that provides access to any number of IT systems and online services. To protect secrets on servers, Yubico also developed YubiHSM, the world's smallest hardware security module (HSM). For easy integration with any IT system, Yubico offers open-source server solutions, support, and validation services.

YubiKey is a hardware-based 2FA key produced by the Swedish company Yubico, founded in 2007. From the beginning, the keys have been exclusively manufactured in Sweden and the United States, which is highly significant in the current geopolitical situation.

Yubikey secures logins to many programs, websites, and services, including Twitter, Facebook, Google, Instagram, GitHub, Docker, Dropbox, KeePass, Microsoft account services, Okta, Reddit, Salesforce, and many more.

YubiKey keys are a convenient solution that enhances user authentication security. In addition to a password or PIN (the first factor of login), users need to have a physical hardware key (the second factor of login). This provides excellent protection against phishing, where login and password are intercepted by third parties. Even if a potential intruder captures the login, password, and a code sent via SMS, they still cannot log in without the hardware key.

One key has multiple capabilities and can be used in various ways. Depending on the model, Yubico supports the following authentication protocols:

  • FIDO U2F/FIDO2 U2F
  • Yubico OTP (one-time password), HOTP (time-based or event-based token)
  • PIV (smart card) - the ability to store a PIV certificate on the key, enabling login to, among others, Active Directory
  • Static passwords - series 5 keys can store up to two long character strings that can later be "injected" into the user interface
  • Challenge-Response - a login method that requires authorization from both the key and the application, based on "password-response"
  • OpenPGP - the ability to store a PGP key for encrypting emails, files, and signing them

Types of available Yubikey keys:

  • YubiKey BIO FIDO Edition - a key with a built-in fingerprint reader. Available with USB A and USB C connectors. Supports FIDO/FIDO2/Passwordless
  • YubiKey series 5 - supports all the authentication protocols mentioned above. Available in various versions with different communication connectors, including:
  • YubiKey 5 NFC (with USB A connector and NFC support)
  • YubiKey 5C NFC (with USB C connector and NFC support)
  • YubiKey 5C (with USB C connector)
  • YubiKey 5 Nano (with USB A connector, in a Nano version that fits directly into the USB port)
  • YubiKey 5C Nano (with USB C connector, in a Nano version that fits directly into the USB port)
  • YubiKey 5Ci (with USB C and Lightning connectors)
  • YubiKey Security Key - Supports FIDO/FIDO2/Passwordless. Available in two versions, with USB A and USB C connectors. Both support NFC.

With one YubiKey, you can log in to many different systems/applications in various ways. The keys are in the form of USB devices and do not require drivers; operating systems recognize them as keyboards. Users do not have to enter passwords manually; they are injected directly from the key when touched, making this solution resistant to interception of typed characters from the keyboard.

Another way to authenticate with YubiKey keys is through biometrics, where the key recognizes the user's fingerprint, and only then does the injection of the code to the application occur. They work in all operating systems. Most YubiKey versions support NFC, so they can also be used with mobile devices.

YubiKey keys are manufactured exclusively in Sweden and the USA. All models are completely dust and waterproof. They do not require charging and have no batteries. They cannot be disassembled or have any movable parts. No driver installation is required for their operation. They are user-friendly and easy to configure.

  • Use a secure element on the device as a digital identity store.
  • Safely eliminate the need for passwords during login.
  • Resist credential theft through phishing and malware attacks, eliminating the need for additional protective software.
  • Automate many modern complex IT processes.
  • Integrate quickly and seamlessly with applications and operating systems.
  • It is a centralized standards-based platform that allows organizations to meet the latest cybersecurity regulations and policies.
